Recap: Capitals 5, Penguins 2

The Penguins fell to the Capitals on Wednesday 5-2 with Washington’s captain, Alex Ovechkin, getting his 1000th career point on a goal scored 35 seconds into the game.

After a turnover in their offensive zone, Ovechkin took a pass from Nicklas Backstrom and rifled it past goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. It was another early hiccup from the Penguins goalie, although with the turnover and odd-man rush generated, it wasn’t entirely on him.

As their rest of the first period went by rather well for both teams, Ovechkin decided to take over the game in the second period taking his patented left-circle wrister on the powerplay and obliterating it past Fleury and the penalty killing Penguins.

Usually not a second period team anyway, the Penguins had the Caps right where they wanted them, just as they do all teams: only two goals down. Except this time, they couldn’t complete the comeback.

All hope seemed lost when Capitals forward Justin Williams took a beautiful pass from Evgeni Kuznetsov and buried it for his 12th of the year. Evgeni Malkin decided he’d take a one-time pass from Justin Schultz and rifle it past goalie Braden Holtby, who played incredible.

It was too little, too late as Backstrom buried his 11th to ice the game for the Caps. Patric Hornqvist added one for his 11th before and empty net goal from Lars Eller ended it.

Three Impressions

  • Fleury Good, Holtby Better: As I argued with twitter followers tonight, I stated that Fleury’s numbers don’t tell the story when it comes to how he played. In my count, the only goal he really should’ve had was the third goal. Kuznetzov just beat him with a great pass to Williams. Holtby was unbelievable, as he always is against the Penguins. My whole argument was that Fleury played good last night. Not that he’s been good all year,  he hasn’t.
  • Steven Oleksy…yikes: It’s been a long time since I’ve been this dissatisfied with a player. Oleksy took not one, but TWO, knee-on-knee penalties last night that were stupid and unnecessary. He hasn’t shown me a lot of promise as the sixth guy or even enough to be worthy of a seventh. He’s gotten into a couple fights. Big deal. Fighting isn’t prevalent anymore. Chad Ruhwedel or David Warsofsky, where are you?
  • Congratulations Ovi: Alexander Ovechkin put up his 1000th and 1001st points last night. Both were goals. Of course, Ovechkin will always be ribbed for his lack of playoff success. He will always be hated by many Penguins fans just because he plays for the Capitals and it’s always been Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin. He deserves recognized, even by Penguins fans, for hitting this milestone against the same team that obliterated any chance he had at finally seeing an Eastern Conference final after is team won the President’s Trophy. But anyway, congrats to the great 8.
